Popular Reasons People Prefer a Female Dentist

As with most health treatments, patients may prefer a female dentist over male dentists. While some studies are still being uncovered on why this may be, there are a few key reasons that explain why some people are more comfortable with female practitioners. Females are increasing as working professionals in the dental industry, and as such, we should analyze why they are beneficial for patients.

Why do people prefer a female dentist?

Many patients prefer to see a female because of their communication skills. Females are more likely to be attentive to your needs and listen carefully to what you are saying. Since females are Mothers and have historically been family caregivers, it is postulated that they are more nurturing in their manner of treatment. This can often make patients who are nervous more comfortable with their dental visit.

Treatment styles

Females have been shown to practice dentistry differently from their male counterparts. They are more likely to focus on prevention methods versus later treatments. This includes things like cavity treatments and educating patients. They also prefer to be more conservative in their style of treatment, recommending more preventative methods than referring patients to restorative care. For example, when teeth are showing signs of decaying, female dentists will often try alternative methods before moving to advanced treatments, while male dentists would be more likely to recommend restorative treatment immediately. These differences can save patients money and keep them educated about how to practice good oral hygiene.

Patient satisfaction

Those treated by females have a higher level of patient satisfaction than their male counterparts, specifically regarding their cost and treatment. This may also be related to how patients feel their dentists are more compassionate and considerate of their feelings. While male dentists often work quicker than females and therefore complete more tasks, they don’t show the same levels of satisfaction as women.

Other considerations

Another theory is that people prefer female because their hands are smaller, and therefore may be able to get harder-to-reach places easily. This results in a more comfortable experience for the patient. While we are still learning key differences in gender treatment, females are increasing in number, and we can expect to see more data soon.

If you prefer your dentist’s gender, ensure you tell the office when you schedule your appointment. Many offices have female on hand. However, they may only be available at certain times. They have the same training and education as male dentists but may be able to make you feel more comfortable during your visit. Many people do not have a preference or may prefer a male dentist. The decision should be left to the patient for the best experience they can have for their treatment.
