Signs of a Worn Dental Filling

It's safe to say that you may have a dental fillings if you are reading this. Having a cavity filled is one of the top reasons a patient goes to the dentist. A filling is necessary once the tooth enamel begins to break down. A filling will stop the cavity from spreading or getting any bigger. We all want to save our natural teeth for as long as possible and keep our smiles healthy and white.

A regular six-month dental examination will help catch any issues early, especially a cavity. Your dentist can fill a cavity reasonably quickly, which will prevent further decay or problems. There is always the question of how long will a filling last? How can I tell if it needs to be redone? If you see your dentist regularly, don’t fear because they will alert you to any issues with your current filling. There are a few symptoms to watch out for between visits to know if your cavity needs refilled.

Symptoms of a worn filling

Typically, a filling should last as long as possible. Several instances would require a filling to be worn and need replacing.

  • Dental floss shredding
  • Pain in the tooth
  • The tooth becomes sensitive
  • You suffered an injury
  • The filling is cracked

These are just a few common reasons a filling would need to be replaced because it has become worn or cracked. If you suspect your dental filling may need redoing, make an appointment with your dentist right away to prevent further decay or damage.

How will my dentist fix my filling?

Once you seek treatment and your dentist verifies that your cavity does need to be replaced because it is worn, the process is quite simple. They will remove the current filling and clean the area. A new composite will be placed in the tooth cavity just like the original filling. Your existing filling will be as strong and durable as the first one. Be sure to keep up on your daily oral hygiene to prevent the filling from becoming worn or cracked again.

Visit your dentist regularly

The best way to prevent cavities or prevent a dental filling from becoming worn is to establish a daily oral hygiene routine and stick to it. This routine should include brushing twice a day and between meals when possible. Always floss and use mouthwash as well. If you work in an office, try to have a travel-size toothbrush and toothpaste on your desk so you can brush after lunch. It also helps if you drink water if you cannot floss after lunch. Even if you don’t have an office, you should still incorporate some daily dental habits into your day. Keep sugarless gum to chew after meals. This will help prevent loose particles from building up between your teeth and prevent bacteria from forming.

Don't ignore worn fillings

Always keep your scheduled appointments with your dentist and keep up healthy habits, and your fillings and natural smile should last for a long time. If you notice any changes in your fillings, reach out to your dentist right away. It's important to get this repaired as soon as possible.
